The American Dairy Coalition Supports Mental Health Awareness Efforts in Rural Communities

The American Dairy Coalition is proud to support the bi-partisan Seeding Rural Resilience Act, passed by both Democrats and Republicans in the House of Representatives as part of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This piece of legislation helps to address an important issue that is often not discussed in rural America - the rising suicide rates.

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, between the years of 1999 and 2016, suicide rates increased in nearly all 50 states - but the rate is 45% higher in rural areas. The Seeding Rural Resilience Act will promote a partnership between the Department of Health and Human Services and the USDA to provide funding to not only develop programs to aid farmers in managing stress, but help reduce the stigma surrounding mental health through public service announcements and increased awareness.

This bill was supported not only by the American Dairy Coalition and many other trade associations representing various areas of agriculture, but also mental health advocacy groups.  To learn more about this bill and how it will assist farmers in rural communities visit this link: https://www.feedstuffs.com/news/house-passes-bill-address-high-rural-suicide-rates
